Keynote Address: Geertje Boschma, PhD., RN

Innovation in Nursing: Historical Perspectives

Geertje Boschma is an Associate Professor in the UBC School of Nursing. Her research focuses on the history of nursing and health care, with special emphasis on mental health. She studies the development of mental health services and the transition to community mental health. Boschma also explores the ways nurses, other health professionals, clients, and families have experienced these changes and contributed to them. This talk will present a historical perspective on innovation in nursing and the various ways nurses engaged with innovating practice as time and circumstances changed.

Innovation in Nursing: Expectation, Experiences and Enablement

Barbara Mildon’s nursing experience spans the health-care continuum, from hospital to home care, regulation to research, and bedside to boardroom. She is currently vice president of professional practice and research and chief nurse executive at the Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences in . A life-long learner, Mildon’s graduate education includes a PhD in nursing from the .  She has a long record of service to provincial and national nursing organizations and presently serves as CNA’s president-elect. The recipient of several awards, including the CNA Centennial Award and the RNAO Award of Merit, Mildon has published and presented widely. Her abiding joy is speaking and being with nurses and supporting and celebrating nursing practice excellence.

Concurrent Sessions at the forum will showcase research and projects of scholarly inquiry from clinicians, nurse researchers, administrators and students. 

Pre-Forum Workshops (Friday, February 4, 2012)

Workshop A (9:00 to 12:00):  Innovating the Culture of Nurses' Work
Facilitators: Geertje Boschma, PhD, Charlene Ronquillo, MSN & Helen Vandenberg, PhD (C).

This workshop explores ideas, experiences, and practices of culture and innovation in nurses' work. The workshop will address three main areas: Reflect on the notion of culture in nursing, explore the ways in which immigrant nurses contribute to renewal of nursing practice, and examine nurses' grassroots approaches to innovation of practice in mental health. Historical perspectives and experiences will provide a lens for reflecting on current approaches of renewal and innovation in (your) nursing practice.
           

Workshop B (1300-1600): Innovation in Nursing: Expectations, Experiences and Enablement

Facilitator: Barbara Mildon, PhD., RN, CHE, CCHN(C)

This workshop will begin by describing the drivers that have established innovation as an expectation at the health system and care delivery levels. Thereafter, experiences of nurses in leading innovation including those profiled by the Canadian Nurses Association in various publications such as the “Ideas that Work” series and “Registered Nurses on the Front Lines of Wait Times” (2009) will be discussed. Lastly, key enablers for innovation will be reviewed including tools, technology, research, and rewards.
